It doesn’t seem so long ago when I unboxed Mackie, my first ever Macbook. But, as I mentioned almost a month ago, I lost her due to an accident. And, since it wasn’t covered by my insurance and finances were (are!) tight, I had to wait for a while to get some cashflow in before I get a replacement.
Well, now, here’s my shiny new Macbook. And yeah – I’m calling her Tinsel. Or Tin/Tinny. Actually, I was going to go for “Mace” or “Macie” – but it was too close to Mackie. So, I thought of a different name. “Tinsel” came up ’cause a) she’s so shiny/sparkly; and b) it’s partly my advance Christmas present.
It’ll probably take a couple of days at least before she’s completely up and running, as I still need to get someone to transfer my old files from the old Macbook to this one in the next day or two. But, hopefully, it will be smooth sailing from then onwards. I can’t wait to give it a go!
Anyway, since today is “Getting to Know You Tuesday”, I thought it might be nice if you can also share what’s your machine/computer of choice. Do you use a desktop or a laptop? Windows or Mac? What are your must-have apps/software?

WAW! I use a lappytop — HP Pavilion dv9000. But it’s not mine. It must have Photoshop, Filezilla, Picasa, iTunes and browsers Safari and FF.

Sasha: Ah yes, I know the one, of course.
One thing that I did end up using a lot when I went back to Windows is Picasa. While I ended up loving my iPhoto more than Picasa, one thing that Picasa has that I realise I miss so much is the ability to make auto collages/mosaics.
Plus, it does have some effects that iPhoto doesn’t.

Gah! Jealous!!!
Enjoy.. I’ll be getting mine soon enough

@Jonic – You getting a new Macbook too? Woohoo!

Very nice! I use a Dell laptop, which I have named Severus Snape. And he can’t live without Firefox, Photoshop, iTunes, and Gimp.

Sherry – Thanks for sharing. Ooohhh… I wonder what’s the story behind you naming it Snape.

It’s a MacBook for me. I switched from a pc a few years ago and I don’t think I could ever go back!

@Mindy Said – I’m a switcher too, so I can definitely empathise.
So, any favourite Mac apps?

She’s beautiful Shai! For some reason Tinsel makes me think of my old alias Tinsley. It’s just a happy sounding name….probably because it does make me think ‘shiny’ like you mentioned.
It throws me off looking at the black keyboard since my Baby Mac is the basic white keys. I love him all the same!
Congrats on the new addition to the Coggins family!

@kari – Yes, very close names huh?!
I’m sure Baby Mac’s gorgeous too.
Do you have any fave apps?

So pretty! Tinsel is the perfect name
I switch in my preference for the laptop and the PC, right now I’m heavy on the PC. My laptop needed a new battery and a new HDD a while ago. It has the the HDD, but I’m running it through mains only now, can’t be bothered buying a new battery. A few years ago I built my own computer, which impresses the pants off people (it’s really not that hard!), but eventually it got too old, the mobo died, and so I ordered a new one. Rather than build it myself though I got a free build from the company I ordered from, so they did most of the work, I just upgraded with a new HDD (tried recycling first but quickly upgraded) and DVD writer later. My dream machine is Tinsel’s twin
I’m a bit behind on the apps, I used to be up with the play, but I don’t explore new stuff now. I do love twitterfox. And I enjoyed Chrome, but then there was some issue, so I’ll wait for the non-beta version to come out before switching back. I think tabbed browsing has got to be the best invention of recent times. At work I still have an old versi0n of IE, I hate it sooooo much! My work is really not up with the play in the IT dept.

@Nicola – Can’t blame you. I’m not an IE fan either. And, I used to do a lot of switching between laptop & PC as well when I was on Win. Often, the desktop won. But now, I like the mobility.

Tinsel is cute. I’m using an HP desktop. Hubs is using our new HP laptop. I think the same one that Sasha has.
BTW, I love advance Christmas gifts,

@Dexie – LOL. Yeah, aren’t advance Christmas pressies, great?!
I wonder why you ended up with the PC and your hubs ended up with the laptop?!

I have a laptop – a Dell. Mine does not have a name but I think I should have a belated christening. My can’t do without apps are Photoshop, Office, Firefox, email and dvd/cd burning and playing softwares.

@jen – Cool on belated Christenings.
Let us know if/when you name your Dell. I once had a Dell laptop. It got stolen from our house. Bad experience.
But, I remember it was lovely too.

The only thing I don’t like about the new MacBook is the glossy screen.
I have the old MacBook, which I use at home. I gotta have FF, Adium, and JUploadr (for uploading pics to Flickr) on the Mac.
I also have a Vaio and I gotta have FF, Pidgin, and Handbrake.

Hi, Pfeffer Girl – Yeah, I heard some people really don’t like the glossy screen. At the moment, it doesn’t bother so much.
Interesting choice of apps you’ve got.

I’ve got a Macbook Pro and I love, love, love it! I’m so used to its controls and shortcuts now — quite frustrating to go back to a PC! haha
My must have’s on my laptop? Hmmm, I must have all my iWorks and MS Office ’08 applications and of course, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD…the lot really hehe
For collaging photos, I use picnik.com
such a great invention!

I’m completely in love with my EeePC laptop which I wrote about here. It’s cute and compact (like it was made for my small hands), runs on Windows XP (although I was hoping to get the one with Linux), and has to have Firefox and Gimp.
Congrats on Tinny

Thanks, Nenette. I have lusted after an EeePC too, after seeing one for the first time last year. They seem so handy. But, the small keyboard intimidated me.
But, I know a lot of folks love ‘em, so I can understand why you do.

Sorry I’m a bit late on my congrats but Congratulations Shai! She’s lovely!!! (And I’m more than a wee bit jealous…)
I’ve got a Macbook, named Phoenix. She’s a white one, but I upgraded the RAM. I’m hoping to get my OS upgraded for the holidays. I can’t wait to have those multiple desktops! One for internet tools, one for graphics, one for blogging, ohhh… I’m in heaven already!

Jami: LOL. You definitely sound like my kind of Mac Girl.
And I love the name of your Mac – Phoenix! Makes me wonder why you chose it. I have to admit to you, though – I am not sure yet how to set up multiple desktops so we’ll see…
