Since this is my first official post here in this blog as an Aussie (yes, I’ve decided to fully embrace my new home), I thought I’d answer two other questions by FMF. They’re both Oz-related, so I figure it’s only fitting. Yes, this is still a part of my Ask Me Anything experiment.
12. What’s your favorite thing about Australia?
There are so many things that I like about Australia, so I’m having difficulty choosing a particular favourite. So, I hope that you allow me to go on about this for now.
Even long before I’ve set foot in this country, I knew it was going to play a special role in my life. Little did I know just how special!
Anyway, I think one of the things that I really like about this country is its social structure. It’s very multicultural. Even though I’m of Asian origin, I don’t feel totally out of place. While there are people who still don’t seem to know how to deal with non-whites here, I don’t sense a huge problem between races. I’ve also encountered some of the friendliest, most helpful people here.
Maybe I’m being naive, but it’s just how it is in my experience so far. Of course, there are nasty buggers too. What country doesn’t get them? But I think, overall, the people are great.
And, although its public/social services aren’t anywhere near perfection, it’s wonderful to see it all in action first hand. Medicare, family benefits, government initiatives… they all help in improving one’s quality of life.
I’m definitely glad that we decided to migrate here.
