The Brand “You” (a.k.a. Me, Inc.)

As some may already know, I’ve been working through issues of personal branding for some time now. But, my mind became at ease about this after a good virtual conversation with Cliff Allen.

Occasionally, I start asking questions again… making lists and taking notes.

Today is one of those days. Especially after reading the article, The Brand Called You by Tom Peters. I know I’ve encountered the points made by the writer before, but it’s always good to have “refresher courses” anyway.

In the said article, there are 5 fundamental questions when it comes to building the “You” brand. Individuals are encouraged to ask - and act upon - the following questions:

1) What makes You different? - What have you got to offer your clients/boss/colleagues - that no one else can offer? What makes you better than your competitors? What are your strengths?

2) What’s the pitch for You? - How do you enhance your personal profile? Do you nurture your network of colleagues, family, friends… so that they become your best PR troupe? How do you make yourself visible, as much as possible?

3) What’s the real power of You? - Do you still think of your job functions via the traditional résumé — or do you embrace the idea of creating a personal brochure for your brand? How do you make sure that you increase your chances of becoming influential in your area of expertise and interest?

4) What’s loyalty to You? - Do you grow, promote, market, and reward yourself? How do you express and explore loyalty in the workplace?

5) What’s the future of You? - How do you define success? What’s your personal mission statement? Are you working your way towards what you hope to achieve - instead of what simply expected?

Anyway, I know that this whole branding thing is primarily targeted for better, more successful careers. But, I believe that even bloggers / podcasters / vloggers can learn something from these things too.

It’s this simple: You are a brand. You are in charge of your brand. There is no single path to success. And there is no one right way to create the brand called You. - Tom Peters
