So, I completed writing a full book review of this second book that I read for 2008 (my first fiction book for the year). When I hit ‘publish’, it all disappeared. And, it’s too late in the day for me to rewrite the whole thing. And, I’ll be too disheartened if I don’t finish today. So, I decided I’ll just have to write a quick, summarised version.
Anyway, Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes falls in to the chick lit genre. And, it’s just the sort of book that I like to have when I simply want to check out and have a bit of light reading.
I’ve been a Marian Keyes fan since I read her novel, Last Chance Saloon a few years ago. I think she’s funny. And, I love reading about Ireland and her take on romance and life in general through her work.
So, as far as chick lit goes, I think Sushi for Beginners is a good one. There may not be a lot of sushi in it, but the metaphor worked. Somehow.

I finished “The Other Side of the Story” a couple of months back. So chick lit but refreshing. I too am a fan of Marian Keyes.

Hi Shai,
I still haven’t read any of her books, but I haven’t really gotten into the chick lit genre much, either. I might have to keep it in mind as I need light reads these days.

….Two things!
1. Computers are not to be trusted!
2. Once I cried in a Nescafe add [you know the one where they split up!]
…I’ve not started reading chick lit – infact, until they have guns and crypto cracking computer skills, there’s very little chance that I will!…
Sime [still got a headache!]

Oh, that’s so funny! I love Marian Keyes! I first read Watermelon a few years ago and just fell in love with her writing style.
Have you read her book of essays called Under the Duvet? Good stuff.
Salut,
Marjorie

I love her books and have read all of them, but I’m one of those people who read all the time.

I haven’t read this either- probably won’t as I’m only occasionally drawn to chick lit. I’m too busy with a series of murder mysteries by Pierre Magnan (very quirky and French) plus Barbara Nadel’s Inspector Ikmen series set in Istanbul. Of course there’s the nonfiction stuff I like in the sciences and the more epic stuff like Amitav Ghosh, but I only get through one epic per month, LOL! Again- uni reading tends to occupy the daytime…

Hi, all. This is me, feeling all shy and embarrassed when I realised I’ve missed responding to all of your lovely comments. My apologies, everyone! I realised that things went really bad in my life shortly after I posted this, so I guess that’s why I didn’t get around the replying. In any case, I thought I’d let you know that I read all your posts and appreciate your comments.
Apples, Marjorie and Hanna – Good to know I’m not the only Marian Keyes fan around here.
And yes, I own “Under the Duvet” too.
Heather – I’m not too surprised. Seeing your reading list, I can understand why Marian Keyes isn’t in your ‘authors-to-read’.
Sime: So, so true (about computers). And so, at least I know what kind of book to get you, in case I ever need to get you one.
Kay: It is definitely tough to find time to read, what with Uni and all. But, it’s good to know that even though you love ‘em mysteries and science non-fiction, you can still be tempted with a bit of light chick lit reading.
