Starting a New Job

In a couple of days’ time, I’ll be starting a new job. A part-time job in the field of psychology again. Yes, I’m back on duty. And, I’m very excited.

What do you usually do when you begin a new job? What kind of preparations do you make? How do you make the transition easier and smoother?

As someone who’s been working from home and online most of the time for the past 3+ years, I have to remind myself a few things, now that I’m going to be out and about more:

1) I shouldn’t wear my pajamas to work anymore. Well, not on days when I’m on “outside world duty” anyway. And, ‘smart casual’ doesn’t mean a pair of old jeans and a comfy long-sleeved top.

2) I’ve got to wear sensible shoes. No more fluffy purple slippers or pink furry ugg boots.

3) I need to sleep and wake up like a normal person again. Going to bed at 4am is not an option. Especially not if I have to wake up at 5.30am.

4) I have to learn how to commute again. You know — buses and trains, waiting and timetables… Maybe a good excuse to buy an MP3 player?

5) I have to get used to seeing my son a bit less, 2.5 to 3x a week. I must admit, this is a biggie for me.

6) I need to remind myself how to write in APA-style, when called for (and not just hyperlink all the time).

7) I should be careful about what I blog too. I don’t want to join the ranks of dooced bloggers. Even though they seem to get plenty of press coverage (book deals and all!).

Hmmm… I wonder if there’s anything else I need to add to this list?

This doesn’t mean you’ll be doing less blogging, does it?

Good luck getting back into the swing of things!
Real clothes feel weird. Wear fun socks to counter the change.

I can relate to the pajamas and slippers. I’ve been working from home for the last 4 years. I’m still enjoying it. I get to spend more time with my 3 kids.

    Goodluck on your new job.

FMF: I need to get myself organised and settled in to my new routine. So, I’d probably have to see how and when to fit blogging in (especially for my hobby blogs). For my work/professional blogs, of course, the blogging continues. :-) Hopefully, once I’m settled, I’d be blogging more too.

Nick: Thanks for your interest and your kind words. I’ve encountered a few questions of the same kind, so I’d probably be blogging about this some time.

Col: LOL! I don’t really wear socks (unless I’m wearing boots) to work.

    Jo: Thanks!

Irene: Thank you and I know what you mean. That’s why I’m still happy that I get to do this part-time. :-) It’s great because of many reasons. Yet, I still get to spend 4 days at home. The best of both worlds for me, I suppose. :D

    Raheel: Thanks! :-)

This is me (Lynne), of course. :-)

Read your message on Multiply, mossied on here to check out your new job’s details.

What exactly will you be doing, by the way? What kinds of clients will you be helping out?

I don’t have my MA degree yet here, but I’m seeing I’ll be graduating March 2007. By that time there’ll be a national licensure exam for counselors, and I’ll have to take that too.

Makes the profession more standardized, though. :-)

Meanwhile, I’m already applying group & creative therapeutic techniques here at the office. “Stress Management” sessions, nothing big, but I can get them to paint (and paint with them!), sculpt clay, and share insights.
    :-)

    Keep me posted, okay?

    Just a realised that I haven’t replied to 2 messages here…

    Connie: Thanks!

Kitty: Dear me. Looks like my response is outdated since we already saw each other and chatted like crazy about work and everything else. :-) Anyway, good luck with your studies and the licensure. Will definitely be keeping you posted with more.
