My sewing machine has been sadly neglected over the last few months. However, my pre-schooler who attends an Early Learning Centre is going to be part of a Nativity Play/Concert for the very first time this coming week. And, he’s assigned to be one of the shepherds.
As soon as I heard the role assignment, I thought about buying or renting a costume at first. But, in the end, I decided to make him a simple shepherd costume instead. Yes, even if I wasn’t quite sure how to make one.
“It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, mummy,” he told me earlier as I started sewing. Just as well, as I probably can’t make anything fancy even if I wanted to.
(So, it’s sort of good that I don’t have to sew one of the three “wise men’s” costumes. Heh.)
The costume is not complete yet. And, I’m finding it a challenge to sew one without any patterns at all. But, ah well. Hopefully, by tomorrow it’ll be finished anyway. More pics coming when the whole thing’s done.
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
I have a sewing machine on my wish list. My grandmother was an amazing sewer. She made all seven of her daughters and their children (my cousins) their own quilts.
When she passed away all of us grandkids brought our quilts to drape around the alter area of the church. It was really special I think. I wish I could sew like that!

@Kari – That does sound really special. And, a great reason to learn how to sew.
I wish you’ll get a machine too one day soon.

That’s what Google is for! There is a whole world of tutorials and free patterns out there so you could easily get some ideas on what direction to take after a bit of web surfing. Good luck.

@Melissa – Google’s usually my friend for this sort of stuff. But, for some reason, even though I found a handful of tutorials, I couldn’t find a proper pattern (that’s free). So, had to wing it.

I’m sure the costume will work out just fine. I mean it’s just a dress kind of thing, right? Hope to see a photo, too.

@Heather – Yeah, pretty much.
I guess that’s why I wasn’t feeling too overwhelmed with the idea. It’s fun to be able to do this sort of thing for the kids too. And yep – I just posted the photos and update!
Thanks.
