Making Money From Blogging

One of the reasons I started writing my Blog Profit Tips series at About.com is because I’ve always believed in the potential of earning money from weblogs. Of course, I should know, I’m a professional blogger. ;)

But, even if a blogger doesn’t get hired by a company like About.com or Weblogs, Inc. to blog, one’s possibility to make money from blogging is still there.

You can pitch a blogging idea to a few companies or so, like Elisa Camahort. Or, you can take Darren Rowse of Problogger.net (among other weblogs) and Paul Scrivens of WorkBoxers as examples. You see, these two guys aren’t just earning spare cash from their online ventures. They’ve actually turned their blogging in to full time careers.

Hmmm… I wonder if anyone else has succeeded in making money off blogging like they have?

  2. Hi Shai: I think there are multiple ways money can be made, including leveraging your blog to land other business you otherwise wouldn’t. (e.g. my Metro column that I only got because the editor could read my blog.)

Also, it depends on how you define blogging…the definition isn’t nearly as narrow as it once was. I have a friend who writes for law.com…perhaps this might have been called something else a few years back, but now it’s hard not to say that blogging…and she’s getting paid for it.

My mantra has been from the beginning: blogging is a tool, and blogging is just one service out of many I can perform for my clients.

  3. I think the big issue, as with everything else, is getting the traffic to come your way. The news story the other day saying that only 7% of the American population has even heard of blogs isn’t very encouraging, unless we see ourselves as pioneers on the cusp of a revolution. Heck, I like thinking of myself as a pioneer!

Darren: You’re welcome. Your site/s defintely rock. :)

Elisa: I totally agree. You’ve done very well to leverage your blogs as ways to earn money – either directly or indirectly. We all certainly can learn from you. In fact, I’d LOVE to see your blogger-for-hire proposal. ;)

Mitch: Traffic definitely plays a big part in earning money from weblogs. That’s why all bloggers wishing to translate blogs to bucks should find ways to learn about SEO, promotions, marketing, etc. About the 7% thing – well, it depends on how you look at it. If blogs already have power as it stands, then can you imagine what blogs can do once the 93% catch up?! And, the thing is, we’re not even limited just to the US population!
