What’s On Your Reading List Right Now?

Inside The Whistling Fish

I love books. Once upon a time, I used to spend a lot of my energy (and money!) in bookstores. And libraries. Reading one to two books a day is not impossible. 1 to 2 books a month will be considered a “slow reading month” for me.

The last couple of years have changed that drastically. Not sure what you were thinking towards the end of last year. Me? Well, I was lamenting the fact that I barely completed reading 10 books in 2007.

That’s why I’m hoping to change that this year. I have no idea where and how I’d find the time and energy to read more books again. But, I believe that a mind cannot be complete if it doesn’t spend enough time reading books.

So, my current reading list includes:
1. The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby**
2. Nikon D40x: Magic Lantern Guide by Simon Stafford**
3. The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
4. Tales of the Unexpected by Roald Dahl

I hope that I’ll be able to finish - and add some more to - this book list.

What’s on YOUR reading list?

* Photo was taken inside The Whistling Fish in Robe, South Australia. One of the most beautiful bookstores I’ve ever been to in my life. It’s one of those places that reminded me how much I love places filled with books. And, how I once dreamt of owning a similar place.

** Big thanks again to Darren, my not-so-secret santa during our b5 kris kringle. He sent these books as part of my Christmas pressie package. They arrived a few days ago. Yay.

Currently I’m reading Shades of Tulsa. It is a compilation book from city locals in The Night Writer’s group. I have yet to find anything else I’m just dying to read, but am looking forward to Jen Lancaster’s third book coming in May.

I’m reading X Marks the Spot - Lea Woodward’s guide book for those wanting to work from anywhere; Unforgettable A Story of Love and Spiritual Growth - an eye-opening book from Michael Skowronski; and a web design book that I find a bit boring.

I know what you mean! I had a “slow reading year” - http://inlightsyrup.blogspot.com/2007/05/reading-log-2007.html

    I’m currently reading

    - What Mothers Do Especially When It Looks Like Nothing (Naomi Stadlen)
    - The Book of Virtues for Young People (ed. William J. Bennett)

    Hi Shai,
Oh, I so agree. I read only nine books last year, which is just terrible, I think. I’ve just started reading Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. ;-)

Hi fellow book lover! Right now, Jeanette Winterson’s “Sexing the Cherry” is on my nightstand. I’m inspired to read “Persuasion” by Jane Austen too after seeing The Jane Austen Book Club in the movies. I’ll read that once I get to buy it!

Kari: I’ve got a different problem - there’s so many things I wish to read. :-) Will keep an eye out regarding your reading list.

Alfa: Never heard of those books. Maybe you can share a link to your review, if you ever write one. Thanks.

Connie: Ah, yes. It will be quite slow for new mums. ;-) Will have a look at your list too some time.

Heather: Looks like we’re not the only ones too. But, I’m a bit surprised. I know you read a lot! ;-)
Toni: Ooohhh… never heard of that book too. Any good? Ah, so the movie was already shown in Manila? It’s still due to be released by the end of the month here in Oz.

AndreyM: Lucky you to be able to keep up with it! I’ve been trying to keep up with a “one book a month” guideline too. But, haven’t been too successful last year. Maybe this year!

Hi, Shai! I’ve been a reader of your blog for a few weeks but am only now “delurking” to comment. I love your blog!

Anyway, I have the same problem as you: finding enough time to read the hundreds and hundreds of books (I think it’s actually in the thousands now) on my to-read list. One thing I stumbled upon while doing my blog was that a weekly book review accomplished two important goals: it kept people coming back to my blog, and, more importantly, it forced me to actually read at least one book a week. More often than not, I’m juggling 3-4 books at a time, but I at least know that I can finish at least one book a week.

    Salut,
    Marjorie

Marjorie: Wow. Thank you! Really appreciate that you’ve finally delurked. Hope to get to know you better. And, another WOW on one book a week. Anyway, it IS a great idea. Just like having a little book club. I did consider doing one here but am too afraid I won’t finish the book before I’m due to blog about it. ;-) Oh yeah, I’m also a book juggler, as you can see in my list. :-) Again, thanks!

Reading more books this year is on my New Year’s Resolution list too. Last year’s # of read books was such a dismal for a book freak like MOI.

    Dear Shai,

Yeah, I have a little bit more control over my schedule than you, so I can clear the decks if I need to in order to finish a book in time for the review. It can sometimes mean fewer hours of sleep than I would like, but it’s worth it as I find that it’s consistently the most popular “column” on my blog.

You know, I would LOVE it if you were to post about how you manage your hectic, hectic schedule. I know you juggle motherhood, marriage, a job, your art, your writing, your blog, and God knows what else, so I would love to know how you manage it all. Time management is a constant issue with me — I’m a freelance writer, journalist, wife, part-time library assistant, novelist, and playwright — and one that I don’t have all the answers to. Can you share some of your secrets? Or do you secretly mainline cocaine to handle it all? ;-)
    Salut,
    Marjorie
