Setting Up a New Home Office

New Office

Since last winter, I haven’t had a dedicated office at home. We’ve got a family study. But for the most part, I’ve been working everywhere except on a proper office desk.

Well, almost a year later, here I am… on my brand new Ikea desk, with brand new shelves (also from Ikea +a DIY solution). And, slowly organising my own space.

It feels good. Having a room of my own again. There are still a few things to do. But, it’s usable now.

And yes, you can see my Mackie there. And, my blank new Inspiration Board. Will be interesting to see how I can fill that board up for the rest of the year.

What about you? Do you have a study/home office? What’s your work space like?

Do you have an inspiration board? What sort of stuff do you put on it?

Call me kapo, but I love looking at other people’s desks, work spaces, studios, inspiration boards… So, if you’ve got photos to share, I’d love to see them too.

If you want to see an annotated version of my work space, just click on the photo to go to the Flickr page with notes.

Shai, here is a picture of my home workspace. It has changed since this picture. I’ve added a second desk for my iMac (it’s in the opposite corner from this desk). http://www.flickr.com/photos/allynedmonds/2061060318/in/set-72157603254208473/

It’s very nice to have your own space isn’t it. Sorry, no thought board, but I think that is a good idea and I may implement it.

BTW: Both desks are from IKEA, I love that place.

Regards,

Allyn

Allyn: Wow. Thanks for sharing that. I love it! And yes, I do like IKEA a lot. :-) If you do end up with a thought/inspiration board, let me know. And hopefully, you’ll share a photo.

I don’t have any pics of my workspace because it tends to be the couch. I’m still working on getting things the way I want them around here even though I’ve been here since September :)

Kari: You can still take pics of your couch and share. ;-) Anyway, hope you get your own li’l work space in order some time. So share a pic when you do!

I have an old pic here of my home set up. I’ve moved since, but the set up is still roughly the same, no window view now though, and I’ve finally upgraded my PC, the new one is much more stable! I ditched the giant printer on the desk though, it’s on the floor now. http://inblognito.blogsome.com/2007/04/04/my-life-in-pictures/

At work we actually moved desks this weekend, we had to pack everything and leave early on Friday, and tomorrow I will arrive at a new desk. It’s a much better space than my old one, which was right by our reception (noisy! and also all the leftover catering was right there, too much temptation…) and away from any natural light. All the people with window seats closed the blinds because of the sun too, so it was awful. Now I have a window seat, but on a less sunny side of the building, so no need to close the blinds, just plenty of natural light. It’s also in a nice little quiet corner, which is great. The downside is less ‘wall’ (partition) space to hang stuff on, but I get a bigger shelf and the desk extension is on the right, which seems much more natural given that I’m right handed. It’s also looking right into people’s bedrooms at the apartments across the way, so that could be good or bad! Yet to be determined ;)

Nicola: LOL. Sounds like it will be an interesting work space! :-) Thanks for sharing a pic of your desk area and telling us all about it.

Where did you get the “S”? I want one.

Shai Coggins reply on February 3rd, 2008:

Rico: Bought it from a small home shop in Robe, South Australia. Can’t remember the name of the store, though. :-( Hmmm… who’s it going to be for? ;-)

No one really. I just like fonts and I’d want one in any letter. Hehe

Hi Shai,
I have a place for the computer in the study, but it is for everyone. I’m the one who uses it the most, though. I use a magnetic whiteboard for my inspiration board. I’m not game to share a photo, because it’s all soooo messy. ;-)

Heather: Sounds like it’s still your own special work space. You just share. ;-) Anyway, hey - I’d still love to see a photo!! :-D

Hello again, Shai!
After catching up on your old entries (I haven’t bloghopped for so long), I thought of taking a photo of my home work station too (will probably upload it tomorrow morning PH time). I was wondering though how come you don’t have any books within arm’s reach. Or is the shelf just beside your work station? Well that would be convenient.
I have a small table with all my CDs and some important books (like Chicago Manual, NYT Manual of Style, some writing books, and a thesaurus), so I’m wondering, where do you keep your frequently used references?
(And yes, I also have a mirror, a hairbrush, and some other girly stuff at my desk, which is really weird no?)

Karla: Wow. Thanks for taking the time! Do share your work station photo when you get the chance. In terms of books… Well, there are two reasons why you don’t see any: 1) I just moved in to this study so most of my stuff is still in another room. & 2) I *do* have a bookshelf next to the desk. Not necessarily at arm’s reach, but definitely quick and easy to get to - especially since my work chair’s on wheels! ;-)

And yep - my frequently used references will be on that shelf.

Wow. Girly stuff at hand, huh? I don’t have ‘em at my desk, but maybe I should. ;-)
