Meet Neve, my Nokia E65 Phone

Day 105 - 365 Days - 14th April 08 : MEET NEVE

This beauty showed up at my house a couple of days ago as a surprise. Wasn’t really looking for a phone ’cause a) my old LG phone was tied up under a contract and b) I was just iPhone-lusting.

But then, hubby’s phone (which was bought the same time as mine) broke down, he checked our phone contracts. And found out that we could upgrade - IF we get a fresh new contract. He ended up choosing a Nokia 6120 (wish he got an E65 too :(). I ended up with Neve.

And, ever since I un-boxed her, she has hardly been out of reach. That never happened between me and a mobile phone before.

Seriously. I’m a gadget freak. But, I’ve never been that crazy over phones. I mean, I like ‘em of course. But, I don’t go around looking for the latest phones. And I definitely don’t go around SMS-ing, talking on mobiles incessantly, etc. In fact, there are days when I just forget where I left mine!

But this… this Nokia E65… Well, I just *love* it. OK. Maybe we’re still in the honeymoon phase. But, so far, I’m crazy about this phone because:

  • It’s WiFi-enabled! Of course, that’s the web head in me talking. Imagine I get to carry a little computer in my pocket? I can check emails, Twitter, etc. wherever there’s an available WiFi connection - without the need to carry a laptop with me all the time. Heh.
  • Voip in my mobile. Yes, I can actually use Skype with a phone now. Well, okay, only tested this with chat + a single SkypeOut call. Will be interesting to test it with Skype-to-Skype calls. And even Skype conference calls. And, I believe I can also set-up other Voip services in it too. Yay.
  • Good basic features. Voice/audio recorder, camera, video camera, clock (with world clock), calendar, To Do lists, Bluetooth, music player, PDF/Office files reader… Although admittedly, the camera’s quality (2 MP, w/zoom) isn’t that great. And, I’m not sure yet if I can easily transfer digital audio to the computer.
  • Works well with some cool mobile apps. Including stuff that enable me to post audio/video/photos to different sites - Flickr/Multiply/Vox/Wordpress.com/Livejournal, etc - w/o using my cellular connection. Just my WiFi at home (or elsewhere). Anyway, will share with you some of my favourite mobile apps some time…
  • It’s pretty. ’nuff said. ;)

So yeah, I really do like it a lot. The only things I wish it had are:

  • A second camera in the front for doing proper video calls.
  • Better imaging quality. I know it’s not meant to be used for ‘real’ photography - but would’ve appreciated a better alternative.
  • A better way to sync with my Mac - and other apps. ;)

Will keep you updated as I learn more.

What about you? Are you a mobile phone kind of person? What do you have right now - and what do you like/don’t like about it?

At the moment I’ve got a Motorola W490. I got it because it was the only purple phone I could find that had everything I wanted. It’s got most everything, camera and video, audio, music player, etc. Of course I always want an iPhone or Blackberry, but then I stop myself from getting one because I just don’t need it ;)

Shai Coggins reply on April 21st, 2008:

Kari: Oooh. Purple phone. Never had one of those. ;-) I always go conservative and buy neutral shades - black, silver, gray… The only “colourful” phone I’ve ever owned was a blue Nokia. :-D

I love my phone, cept at the moment I keep thinking ’surely it’s broken or something?’…. not much cell action happening at the mo ;) I have a Samsung A920, great phone. I bought it because I dropped my MD player at the gym one time and broke it, so I got the phone that doubles as a MP3 player. It was also the nicest ‘clamshell’ phone on the market (I hate that they’re called that!) What I didn’t realise till later though, is that it’s kind of a one or the other thing with the MP3 player. If I get a call/text, it either interrupts the music or gives me an alert, but for texting, I have to exit the music player to read and reply, kind of a pain. It served me well for a year or so though, then I finally bought an MP3 player, also a Samsung, I’ve found they’re a really good brand and they’re stylish too (Kari - my MP3 is purple!). Before this I was strictly a Nokia girl when it comes to phones. The features I use are pretty good, the alarm has lots of options, I used to set my old one every night, but this one lets me do a Mon-Fri alarm so I never have to remember to turn it on or off. The one thing that REALLY bugs me is that there is no way of adding new words to the dictionary, so I have to stop predictive, write the word, then go back to predictive. Last night I gave it a little treat, I bought a ’skin’ for it, a blue ’sun ray’ background with black flowers - sort of japanese inspired I think. V cute!

Nicola: Sounds like you’ve got quite a funky phone there. :-) Good that you love it too!

OMG, I want that phone, Shai!!! :)
And like you, it would be very close at hand at all times…
The phone I have right now is a hand-me-down from my sister… Ate always gives me her old one when she gets a new one. We do pay-as-you-go because we hate contracts and we just use our phone for emergencies only.
But for a phone like your Neve or an iPhone [sigh], I’d happily sign a contract :)

Shai Coggins reply on April 21st, 2008:

Nenette: LOL. Well, I hope you can have one too! ;-) I also never liked contracts. Used to do prepaid phones too. But, realised I was spending nearly AU$30 a month (or more) in general anyway, because of prepaid restrictions. So, going on a AU$29/mo plan (w/$120 spending) didn’t seem too much of a jump. At least, that’s how it seems anyway! :-D

    Hi Shai,
Lol, I think it’s kind of funny, to be so rapt in a phone. But I think I do understand. I was able to update mine at Christmas time, but I just went with a cheap deal on a purple phone. It doesn’t have a bunch of fancy things, but it does have a camera and some other necessary things. I couldn’t even tell you what kind mine is, but I do find myself needing it everywhere I go. I use the time on mine as a clock. The calendar & reminder features are pretty handy, though. Your phone sounds very flash. ;-)

Shai Coggins reply on April 21st, 2008:

Heather - I am such a gadget girl, I get soo excited about new toys all the time. :-D And oooh… another purple phone owner. As I said, though, I’m not one who long for flashy phones. But, I won’t say no to one! :-D

hi shai…i got me a nokia e65 but unlike you, i’m not into naming my gadgets so it’s just my….mobile phone! hehe

question..have you discovered how to sync your calendar (in your macbook — i’ve got the basic icalendar + the microsoft entourage 2008 (equivalent of MS Office ‘07)) from your phone and macbook and vice-versa?

Just like you, I love my phone! :-)

Shai Coggins reply on May 3rd, 2008:

Hi, Christine. Wow, snap, huh? Do you also have the black E65? My hubby got me in to the habit of naming things that’re close to me (except our house; our house still doesn’t have a proper name!)…

Anyway, on your question, I use GooSync at the moment (free version) + Spanning Sync (fee based) to sync my Google Calendar + iCal + my phone calendar.

Basically, Spanning Sync syncs my iCal + Google Calendar. GooSync syncs my Google Cal w/my Phone calendar. I love this ’cause I use GCal a lot w/work & it’s great to have a desktop version (via iCal). Now, even my phone syncs!

I haven’t heard yet of any tool that syncs the E65 w/ the iCal directly. I’ll let you know if I find one.

See, i’m all about my Blackberry 8310!… I had an E61i and it just didn’t cut it :(

That said, i’ve been Sony Ericsson most of my life - mainly because they seemed to take the best pictures, go figure!

so - have you skyped with your new baby yet? here, try it!… gtvone1974 [oh great, skype spam for me!!] if you like…

    Great post, very useful!

    Sime

Shai Coggins reply on May 3rd, 2008:

Nice to find you here, Sime! Glad you found this post useful.

Anyway, so… you’re a Crackberry addict, huh? I’ve never really gotten in to Blackberry. Never heard of a good deal here in SA.

And yes, I’ve tried Skype on it (via Fring). But, haven’t really fully tested it yet. Figuring out a way to use Fring better on the phone. I’m not completely happy the way it’s set up right now.

In any case, I added you to my Skype contacts. Hope you add me right back. Maybe we’ll get to chat one of these days…
