Basic Figure Drawing Class Mosaic After 5 lessons taken in 1.5 months’ time, my basic figure drawing class ended last weekend. Yes, my Saturday mornings will no longer be spent staring at naked bodies and trying to capture them with charcoal, pencil or conte on paper.

Unfortunately, due to my trip to Tasmania, I only managed to attend 4 out of 5 classes. Within the classes that I attended, some of the things that were tackled include “sighting”, basic measurements, perspective, composition, light, shadows, tone, and a bit on foreshadowing.

It’s all good, as I’ve developed a little more confidence in figure drawing. And, I know that it’s something that I want to continue doing.

Anyway, one of the best things that came out of this class is the fact that our instructor helped me accept my personal drawing style. She didn’t try to change my approach to life drawing. She simply encouraged me to improve what I already know. To see how I can make things better. Some of the comments that she gave me include the reference to my ‘natural style’ as being “expressive” (esp. with this drawing) and “abstract” (particularly this sketch).

And yes, I also met some really cool and talented people. Although we didn’t exchange details, I hope to see them again one day. Maybe in another class or two.

That’s right. I’m thinking of taking another art class. I’m thinking of trying Basic Figure Painting or Portaiture next time. I’m not sure if I’d go to the same art school though, as the fees are quite expensive in that venue. But, I’m also a bit reluctant to try somewhere else, in case I don’t like it as much as I did this class. Anyway, I’ll just have to wait and see how things go.
