Day 116 - Project 365 - 25th Apr 08: Lest We Forget (Anzac Day Memorial 2008)

I was not born in this country. I do not know all its aches and pains, joys and triumphs… I have yet to understand what it fully means to be Australian. There’s still a lot of things that I’m learning about this country that I now embrace as my home.

But, even though Australia has only considered me as one of its own a few years ago… I feel that it has loved and welcomed me. That is why I find it easy to love it back.

I appreciate its beauty. And, I recognise its complexities and issues. I’m honoured to be a part of its land and its people.

That is why I want to dedicate this post to those who fought in many wars for this country.

I may not have any family or friend who defended this land. But, I do appreciate the many Australians who offered their lives. Thank you.

Day 109 - Project 365 - 18th April 08 : Adelaide Bloggers & Social Web Media Meet-up

It was a bit of a challenge to organise Adelaide blogger meet-ups to start with. I remember wanting to do this four years ago. Then, I finally managed to do my first call-out to fellow Adelaide bloggers about 8 months ago. Although there was interest, it wasn’t enough to push things along.

Then, I finally decided just to give it a go in Jan 08. It ended up as a quiet party that made me wonder if there were really enough folks who’d be interested in web-to-F2F meet-ups.

Well, in the last couple of months, my local contacts online seem to have grown a lot due to various social networks that I’m a part of. And, with the encouragement of fellow web enthusiasts here in Adelaide, we’ve finally managed to pull off a full get-together - with a real a mixture of folks from Twitter (via SATUB), Adelaide Social Web Facebook Group, Bloggers’ Meetup Group, and some Flickr friends.

All you need to do is to read some of the comments by meetup attendees in various parts of the web during the last 24 hours to know how the get-together turned out. But hey - I’m not going to let you hunt for folks’ comments. I collected some of them for sharing in this post (see below).

Anyway, here are the 20+ folks who made it to the meeting at Bocelli’s Caffe Ristorante on the 18th of April 2008 (links lead to people’s online profiles and sites):

Thanks again to all who attended the meet-up. I really had a fantastic time meeting all of you. It’s always wonderful to see faces and smiles… to hear voices and laughter. It makes such a huge difference!

Anyway, if you’re keen to see my profiles too, you can find me on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, among other places.

And, to see photos of the meet-up, I’ve posted them on the Meetup group and on Facebook. Janette Toral and Kay Walker also posted some photos on Facebook.

Here are some of the comments about the meet-up:

“An inspiring Meetup! A welcoming gang of enthusiasts! I had fun! Laughed and chatted and shared and learned heaps! Thanks everyone. Congratulation Shai for a fantastically successful meetup.” - Bridie Gallagher (via Meetup page)

“is happy to have met a lovely group of friends face to face tonight. online is great. faces are better.” - Charlie Robinson (via Twitter)

“met an amazing array of peeps at a webloggers meet.” - Kay Walker (via Facebook)

It was a long weekend here - celebrating Adelaide Cup Day. I didn’t place any bets, watch any races, or wear any fun hats. I did, however, manage to go to the city twice.

First, to see the Northern Lights display (a lights show in North Terrace, in conjunction with the ongoing South Australian Arts Festival). Here’s a mosaic of my favourite shots from the (very hot!) evening -

Yes, the Nikon D40x and my Nikon 55-200mm VR have been hard at work.

Okay, I’ve been hoping to take part in and/or organise an Adelaide Bloggers Meetup in the last 3 years or so. But, somehow, nothing ever came of it. I’m not a real big party planner, so I kept dragging my feet when no one else took the initiative.

However, I’ve been meeting more and more people here who have become bloggers. And, I found out that fellow b5er Ramsay and local social media legend Lee Hopkins are in the same city. Besides, I’ve always been curious to meet fellow Adelaide bloggers.

That’s why when Jon finally jump started an Adelaide Weblogger Meetup and invited me to help co-organise it, I said yeah - let’s give it a go and see what happens.

So, if you’re in Adelaide and you’re interested in getting a blogging group going, please let me know. I’d love to chat more about it.

We haven’t really set a time, date or location yet for this - so definitely open to suggestions.

If you’re not sure yet whether you can join a meet-up or not but you’d like to stay informed - then, join the Meetup group anyway. That way, you’ll get more info as we get this thing going.

Oh, and do pass the message along, if you know anyone who might be remotely interested. ;-)

If you are:

1) Based in Adelaide, Australia
2) Interested in business, particularly VC funding
3) Looking at networking with a VC / business expert and other business people

— then, you might want to check out the TechMentor Information Session to be held on the 15th of May at 5:30pm in the city. This event is being offered through the Venture Capital Board of South Australia. If you’re interested, visit the VCBSA site and register. I also uploaded the press release and brochure in this page (available only until end of May 2007).

Matthew Michalewicz, CEO of SolveIT Software Pty Ltd and author of Winning Credibility, is the brain behind this very interesting project. I met Matthew a few months ago. And, I believe that he’s a great guy who has a lot of energy, experience and expertise on these matters. So, I’m sure that TechMentor will be a project worth taking part in.*

In general, though, it’s really fantastic to see something like this happening in Australia, especially here in Adelaide where initiatives like this is uncommon. In fact, anyone who’s ever tried to start a business, raise capital, set up a company, etc will know that resources are scarce. So, hopefully, this is just the beginning of greater things to come.

* Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I won’t be part of this. But, I thought I’d pass this information along to anyone else who might want to give it a go.

A couple of weeks ago, Matthew Michalewicz, CEO if SolveIT Software, invited me to an Entrepreneurship and Networking Evening event that will be hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (South Australia). It also incorporates the book launch of “Winning Credibility: A Guide for Building a Business from Rags to Riches”. It is authored by Matthew and his dad, Zbigniew Michalewicz.

Some presentations during the evening include:

  • “Getting Started with Start Up Capital” (by Amanda Heyworth, CEO, Playford Capital)
  • “Innovating with Somebody Else’s Money” (by Mike Burfield, Director, InVenture Partners)
  • “Training and Education for Entrepreneurs” (by Bill Price, CEO, Venture Capital Board)

I’ve met Matthew and his incredible family (congrats again on the birth of your new baby boy), who are all a pleasure to talk to and be with. They’re friendly, warm, intelligent, and dedicated. It’s great to be in the company of such individuals.

Anyway, if you’re in Adelaide on Wednesday, 26 July 2006 (5.15 - 7.15 pm), you might want to consider booking for the said event. It’s free but you need to register. To do so, just go AmCham’s website and book online. You can also print off a PDF copy of the booking form and send it off to them. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia. And apparently, there are already about 300 people who have registered so far. So, it’s all looking good for the organisers and participants.

Now, if you decide to go, please let me know. I’d love to meet up and say hello. I’m really hoping that I could make it to the event.

The words — FAMOUS. POWERFUL. CHIEF. WELL-KNOWN. INFLUENTIAL. MOVER AND SHAKER. — aren’t exactly words that I’d use to describe myself. Yet, these words almost glared at me today as I read the article featuring myself in Adelaide’s main newspaper, “The Advertiser”. Maybe it’s a good thing that it’s buried somewhere on page 52, so… ;-)
In any case, here’s the obligatory snapshot of the piece:

The Advertiser Feature

If you got here through this article - thank you so much for taking time to visit. I really appreciate it. I hope that you find something of value around here somewhere. If you get the chance, please say hello. I’d love to hear from you.

If you’re interested to know how this thing came about, well, about 3 weeks ago, an article on online businesses came out at the Sydney Morning Herald. b5media, the blogging network that I’m running with 3 other guys was mentioned in the said piece. And, there was a reference to me being an Adelaide-based blogger who’s part of this “10 Most Powerful Women in Blogging” list (see related blog post). Hence, that caught the eye of some folks at The Advertiser.

That’s when I received an email and an invitation for a coffee chat about the world of web logs. And, truth be told, when a photographer came in the middle of my talk with ‘Tiser writer/columnist Samela Harris, I was actually taken aback. You see, I was only expecting a small blurb on the newspaper, somewhere in business, IT, or some other section - NOT a full feature on me and blogging. So, I didn’t think a photo of me would be needed.

You see, blogging isn’t a real big thing here in this neck of the woods. And, the few who may have heard the word ‘blog’ mostly think that it’s just a personal journal or diary. Most certainly do not think of blogs as a way to promote a cause, to provide a platform, and/or to create a proper money-making business.

So, when Samela (The ‘Tiser’s Resident Cyberspace Expert) received the go signal to do an article about a blogger and blogging, she told me how pleased she was about it. And, I am too. Not just because I’m getting some taste of “fame” in my home city. I’m mostly pleased because I’m all for increasing the profile of bloggers and weblogs in general. You see, while mainstream media in the U.S. and other parts of the world have really started paying a lot of attention to blogs and bloggers, Austalia still has a lot of catching up to do on this front.

Anyway, as I said, the interview and impromptu photo shoot was done about 3 weeks ago. I was told that the piece was meant to come out 1-2 weeks back. When it didn’t get published then, I thought the article may have already been axed by the eds. I know this happens in the world of publishing, so I was okay with that. I was just happy to have gone through the interview, as it was a real pleasurable experience. It was great meeting Samela and getting to know her. I’ve known OF her since I moved here 3 years ago (she even wrote about FreshWave.TV on her column), so it was good to get the chance to talk.

But, just when I was actually putting the interview/article out of my mind, just before lunch time today, my husband received a call at home from a friend who was sending his congratulations on my “half page spread on the newspaper.” Since we didn’t have the paper just yet, and I was on my way to an appointment with my hairdresser then, I couldn’t check it immediately.

After dropping me off at the beautician’s, my husband bought the paper and looked for the article while he was having coffee and taking care of our son. Apparently, my two-year-old saw my picture and started shouting and pointing, “Mummy! Mummy!” A lady at the cafe was trying to interact with my boy very kindly then. So, she asked him, “Oh. You think that’s your mummy? Does that lady look like your mummy?” My husband, who probably couldn’t contain his pride, answered: “Actually, that is his mummy.” The nice lady was probably understandably put off by my beaming husband. Haha. Of course, hubs didn’t really mean to sound so snooty. But I guess, being British, he just can’t help himself. ;-) He did admit to me later on that he wished he didn’t say anything. :-D
Ah, well. There’s my day in the limelight.

Tomorrow, I’ll be back to being boring ol’ me. Just blogging away quietly in my little home office in a suburb just outside Adelaide on some days. Or, being a wife, a mum, an employee, a friend, a colleague, a therapist/counsellor… Definitely none of that power and fame stuff. And, the only moving and shaking I’d do is if I ever get to haul myself to a Salsa dance class or club one of these days. Heh.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, “The Advertiser” doesn’t seem to have an online version of the article. If you’re interested in reading it, here’s a bigger JPG scan of the newspaper article.

Adelaide Fringe 2006 - Photo Collage

The Adelaide Fringe 2006 has officially started. The Fringe and the Festival of Arts happen every even numbered years here and they’re great. Two years ago, I didn’t really get involved, although I did participate in an art exhibit then, as part of a local group exhibit in my council area.

This year, I managed to go to the Fringe opening night parade/party (see photos) the other night. Definitely worth checking out. I think it was the most “crowded” event I’ve ever attended here. :-)
I haven’t really booked many shows just yet, but I’m off to watch Ross Noble (who’s often part of Spicks and Specks). He’s a British comedian (a Geordie, I was told) who’s married to an Aussie.

Yes, yes, I know I said that I’m not much in to Aussie comedies and dramas. Lately, however, I’m getting more than just a couple of chuckles from Spicks and Specks and The Glass House. And - I’ve even started watching Home and Away. Aaaccckkk! Shhhhh. Please don’t tell anyone!

Next thing you know, I’ll be admitting that I’ve started watching Big Brother. Yikes. Please stop me!

Maybe I am just becoming more and more Aussie-fied. Ha. :-D

Australia Day 2006 Collage

It’s my first year to celebrate Oz Day as a full-fledged Aussie. But, my family and I didn’t do anything extra special as it was just way too hot today (39+ deg celsius, thank you).

So, we just stayed at home, turned up the aircon and watched the cricket and the Australian Open. Not a bad way to celebrate, really. ;-)
As an added tribute, I created the collage you see here.

Here are some of my Oz-related posts in this blog:

From FreshWave.TV:

If you’re a fellow Aussie, do share how you celebrated today’s special day. If you’re a non-Aussie, do join us in celebrating too by telling us what are the things that make you say or think, “Oh yeah, that’s so Australian!”
