It’s my first year to celebrate Oz Day as a full-fledged Aussie. But, my family and I didn’t do anything extra special as it was just way too hot today (39+ deg celsius, thank you).
So, we just stayed at home, turned up the aircon and watched the cricket and the Australian Open. Not a bad way to celebrate, really.
As an added tribute, I created the collage you see here.
Here are some of my Oz-related posts in this blog:

If you’re a fellow Aussie, do share how you celebrated today’s special day. If you’re a non-Aussie, do join us in celebrating too by telling us what are the things that make you say or think, “Oh yeah, that’s so Australian!”
couple of questions from a Canadian
(1) how many Asians are there in Australia? My aunt lives there, but I’m really not sure if there are that many.
(2) What beer(s) do Australians really drink?? I’m pretty sure that Foster’s isn’t really that high on the list even though that’s the one thats exported out the most.

Hey, I really like your collages. Very nice. dp

Spelunca: Good questions.
On #1 – I can’t give you an exact number, as there are different stats for every state. But, Asians are definitely a growing minority here in Oz. Probably, one of the most popular group of migrants, due to the country’s proximity to Asia.
On #2 – Beer and Aussies definitely go together. And, there are plenty to choose from. Foster’s may not be too high on the list, but it’s still pretty popular. Some other popular brands include: Cascade, Coopers, West End, and VB.
Doc Possom: Thanks so much!

Have you ever thought how much collage art is related to the digital experience? Cut and paste? I hadn’t till I read Darknet by J.D. Lasica. (He’s one of the founders of ourmedia.) The book points out how so much of modern creativity is digital cut and paste. Borrowing has always been a part of culture, and today it’s done online. Great book. I recommend it. I just thought the connection to your online stuff and the physical cut and paste of collage was really neat and very fitting. dp

I *love* this collage.
What strikes me is the mellow quality of the orange, blue and green colors. Is there something about Australia that has to do with “being mellow?”
Belated happy birthday to Cam!

Hi Shai -
I posted this question in your Travel & Culture article but you might have missed it, so here it goes again…
“Since you are Australia-based you’d be the best person to answer my query. Is June a good time to visit the Southeast (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide) considering that it’s almost winter there. Does it rain much at this time of the year or would we still find glorious sunshine? Is it cold? Am thinking of bringing the family there for our annual vacation and this is the only month that we would all be free from commitments (school, work and all).”
Many thanks!

Hi Shai,
We just celebrated by watching the skyshow from our front verandah. It was fun and even bubby enjoyed it.

That’s a cute collage!

Doc Possom: I haven’t really thought about it that way. But, you just might be right!
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Aileen: Thank you! Aussies are anything but “mellow” – methinks.
But maybe, it’s just how I perceive life here to be like… mellow — nice and quiet and fun.
Al: You will be getting here in the middle of winter if you come in June. Fortunately, winters here are kinda’ mild. We don’t always get extreme tempratures. My first visit to Oz was in June, and we had great weather in general and we loved it. So, you can get lucky. But, there are no guarantees! If you want to be safe, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Cairns might be a better bet – weather-wise. But yeah, you’ll miss the “European feel” of Melbourne and Adelaide.
Feel free to ask away if you have other things that you’d like to know. Do come in Oz — it’s a wonderful place to visit. Don’t let the weather deter you!
Heather: Wow! A skyshow on your front verandah. Sounds like a treat!
Connie: Thanks!

Better late than never, I always say…well, almost always (I hate being late for engagements!)….however, I’ve just stumbled across this blog today…23rd April…but I had a great Australia Day…shared it with two German friends who have been living in Oz for 50 years now. We didn’t drink beer but we did cause great damage to some Aussie ‘champagne’ and a particularly excellent 1996 Penfolds Bin 707! Of course, since that day other celebrations, authentic or otherwise have been enjoyed. On the subject of ‘beer’…Fosters is a Carlton beer…as is VB and the flagship ‘Crown Lager’. When I do drink beer, it is always a product of Carlton…Crown being my most favourite of their brilliant beers/lagers.
I hope to frequent here more often now I’ve discovered you all!
Cheers!
