Focus is Key

When I was actively practicing as a consultant, I used to tell my clients the importance of focus. I know how easy it is to lose one’s sight on this basic premise when there are so many things that catch one’s fancy. After all, don’t I juggle more than just a couple of job functions?

However, there are more distractions in life than career diversification. (Yes, yes… to some, this is just indecision. But, I have a different view on this. That’s for another time to discuss, though - when I find that insect quote that I’d like to refer to.)

Anyway, recently, I decided to rediscover this concept of focus. And, I began the process when I wrote:

“On Weeding and Weblogs”

For the first time in my life, I learned how to weed a garden yesterday. The fact that I’ve never owned a garden will explain my lack of experience. I still don’t own this garden. But, it’s the first garden that I am (half) responsible for. So, weed I did.

It’s a weird feeling - killing something that grows.

Being new to this country, I’ve never seen most of these weeds in my life. So, in the beginning, I didn’t even know which ones are weeds and which ones aren’t. Especially since some of them actually have pretty purple flowers.

Anything with purple flowers can’t possibly be weeds, eh?

Well, it turns out, they’re one of the nastiest weeds we’ve got around here. They grow and spread quickly. They take over the whole lawn. They have nasty thorns.

So, with a pair of garden gloves, I started pulling weed after weed after weed.

I’m doing the same thing with my blogs. That’s why I’ve been ‘missing in action’ around here.

Over the last few years, I’ve become so addicted to blogging that I ended up with nearly (or over?) a dozen blogs all over the place.

Then, I realised that most of them are like my ‘pretty purple flowers’ online. I didn’t know which ones are real and which ones aren’t. I felt as though I couldn’t possibly get rid of any of them.

But, I too must learn to sift through the real plants and get rid of the weeds when it comes to my online garden. Otherwise, I might end up killing all of what I’ve planted.

Weeding and pruning might just give my real plants… er, blogs… the chance to bloom and grow.

At current count: I’ve deleted 3 weblogs so far.
