Without any disrespect, I have to say that I don’t take Jack of All Blogs very seriously. After all, most of liberalcowboy’s posts are strange – bordering on the offensive (if you take him too seriously). So as not to get too bothered by some of his posts, I’ve put in the not-too-serious sign up when I visit his blog.
But then, I’m linking him twice in a row, so I guess, there is something there amidst all the poking, tugging and pulling. I’m particularly struck by this statement:
It’s almost certain that 80% of your blogging posts are going to be absolutely meaningless. Just like this one. But you have to have them. Otherwise people quit visiting, and if they quit visiting than the 20% of your posts that do matter, don’t matter anymore. Without visitors the 20% of your posts are worthless.
As someone who’s more concerned about creating posts that I’m happy with rather than just posting anything and everything (er, quality over quantity?!), I do wonder if I am hurting my blogging life for not posting more.
Do readers really visit blogs that are updated more often? Or, are they happy to visit blogs just whenever?
Is it true that quantity will eventually yield in quality in blogging? I know that in art and writing exercises, this is something I’ve been told many times over. Maybe it does transfer to the practice of blogging too.
Hi Shai,
Well, I think I’d agree. People are willing to read every day, even if the entries aren’t earth shattering, because they’re waiting for the ones that are. If you’ve written them before, they’re willing to keep reading until you post them again. I’ve learnt this from my five years plus on DD writing just about every day.
I have several readers who only ever contact me via email and my hits are regularly pretty good. The responses come when I do write something I’d consider not half bad, but they’re reading to know when it happens.
I tend to believe it works for just about everything in life, but making it work can be the difficult part, or at least making it practical.

I think its true. But I also think its not. I just made it up based on something I read on some website. But the mroe I analyzed it. I think there is something about it. I think we have to blog consistently and I think some posts stand out more than others. For me its 80/20 for you it could be more. It was just supposed to get you thinking. And by the way. Thanks for being you. You are inspiring. And sometimes I can be nice. Just like this. Just don’t tell everyone. I admire your work, and what you have to say over here.

Heather: True! And, I would definitely like to increase the quantity of my blogging (and writing, art-making, etc.)…
David: Nice to know your name. And thanks for dropping by — and for your nice words. I’m really pleased. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.

I totally think readers visit more often if there’s a regular posting schedule, preferably daily. They might not read carefully or comment, but they do come back if there’s often something that appeals to them.
For me, I have a daily posting target I like to meet as a form of self-discipline. Of course I want people to read my stuff, but I also like cranking it out.
BTW, I read David’s blog and it’s very entertaining esp. if you take it with a grain of salt.

I think quality does matter but quantity brings you the audience. Even search engines like blogs that are updated often and they are robots. Anyway, I just came across your blog and find it very interesting. You’re a creative person. I wish there was better ways too keep track of pages visited because Bookmarks and del.icio.us don’t cut it anymore. I will try to remember your blog and pay more visits. Who knows you might find my blogs interestesting too?

I agree with Soyola 100%. My experience (with both of my blogs) has been that I get more repeat visits when I post often. Because I strongly believe in quality, too, I find that I spend a lot of time on blogging. I’m still trying to find that perfect balance, if there is one.
That said, I do know some bloggers who post once or twice a week who get an amazing amount of traffic. It’s like they have groupies! I’m still analyzing their sites, but it appears that they owe a great deal of their traffic to the time they spend visiting other people’s blogs. I devote a significant amount of time to visiting, too, but sometimes I slow down. After all, I have to sleep and spend some time with my family!
This is my first visit to your site. Great blog. Look for me to visit often.
